The University of Arizona has a long and proud history of developing the technology and techniques used to learn about the Universe through the observation of light at infrared wavelengths.  The Lunar & Planetary Laboratory and Steward Observatory were the home units for many of the pioneers of infrared astronomy, and those who have enabled impressive near and mid-IR NASA missions (George Rieke, Rodger Thompson, Marcia Rieke).  Today, Steward Observatory continues to be a home to those using Infrared Astronomy to expand our knowledge of how the Universe works.
