On his first full day on campus, new University of Arizona President Garimella explored the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab with Buell Jannuzi, head of the Department of Astronomy and director of Steward Observatory.

Wednesday marked the start of a new era for the University of Arizona, when Suresh Garimella spent his first full day on campus as the university's 23rd president.

Garimella, who officially assumed the presidency Tuesday, gave brief remarks in front of Old Main Wednesday morning, then headed to the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab to meet with Carmala Garzione, dean of the College of Science, and Buell Jannuzi, head of the Department of Astronomy and director of Steward Observatory. Below the campus football stadium, the mirror lab produces enormous mirrors for the largest telescopes in the world, all polished to a precision of a millionth of an inch. Jannuzi took Garimella behind the scenes at the lab, showcasing some of the technologies that have put the University of Arizona on the global map for astronomy innovation.

“The staff, students, and faculty of Steward Observatory have worked together for over a century to advance our understanding of the Universe, through our research and through the development of world-leading instrumentation and observatories,” said Jannuzi. “It was an honor to share some of that work with President Garimella during his visit to the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab, where we make the world’s largest mirrors for telescopes.”
