Sarah Stamer graduates this spring with her B.S. in Astronomy and B.S. in Physics

As she prepares to graduate with her B.S in Astronomy and B.S. in Physics, Sarah Stamer reflects on highlights from her time at Steward Observatory, including being a 2023 Astronaut Scholar (the only one from University of Arizona). Her advice for future astronomy students: “Stay humble, work hard, and be kind.” Read her full interview below.

What brought you to Steward Observatory?

I grew up in Flagstaff, and learning and volunteering at Lowell Observatory was what motivated me to pursue astronomy. I decided to come to Steward for the incredible program that we have here and the warmer weather than what I grew up in.

Can you describe your research and any especially interesting learning experiences you’ve had during your time here?

For 2.5 years, I was involved with a project combatting science misinformation online. This year, I've been working on my Honors Thesis in astronomy education, examining the reasoning students and subject experts employ in their written responses to a cumulative assignment in an astrobiology Massive Open Online Course. During the Spring 2024 semester, I'm also working on executing atmospheric retrieval models to determine if the Habitable Worlds Observatory could characterize the atmosphere of a post-habitable, Venus-like exoplanet.

What's your greatest point of pride from your time at Steward Observatory?

My greatest accomplishment was being named a 2023 Astronaut Scholar and the only one from the University of Arizona! It is an honor and privilege to be awarded this nationally competitive scholarship. I am grateful for the opportunities it will provide me as I progress in my career.

Can you share piece of wisdom from your time as an astronomy student?

Stay humble, work hard, and be kind.

What’s next?

Pursuing my Ph.D. in Physics with an Astrophysics Concentration at the University of New Mexico!
