Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI)

The Mid InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) will provide the JWST with imaging and spectroscopy at wavelengths from 5 through 28.5 microns. Because it operates in space and at cryogenic temperatures, JWST will provide unprecedented sensitivity across the entire MIRI operating range. MIRI is an international collaboration among a European Consortium (EC) of European partners, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), an international science team, NASA, and ESA. The EC has constructed and delivered the MIRI optical system and JPL was responsible for the detectors (three 1024 X 1024 Si:As IBC devices), data chain, and flight software; the science team is led by Professor George Rieke.
