Daniel DeFelippis

Postdoctoral Research Associate I

Daniel DeFelippis joined Steward Observatory in 2024 as a postdoctoral research associate to work with Erika Hamden on understanding diffuse gas around galaxies, also called the circumgalactic medium (CGM). His research has focused on the angular momentum of galaxies and gaseous halos in cosmological simulations, but over time he has become more drawn to collaborating with observers to connect simulations of galaxy evolution to observations of the CGM. He is interested in using simulations like IIlustrisTNG to make predictions about CGM gas that can be detected with future instruments that are being developed at Steward. Outside of astronomy, Daniel may be found reading fiction, playing board games, or checking out the latest horror movie.

Areas of Interest: Circumgalactic medium, hydrodynamical simulations, galaxy kinematics/formation/evolution
