Jonah Lotz graduates this winter with his Bachelor's of Science in Astronomy and Computer Science

As Jonah Lotz prepares to graduate with his BS in Astronomy and Computer Science, he reflects on highlights from his time at Steward Observatory. Read his full interview below!

What brought you to Steward Observatory?

I have always been fascinated with two things: space and math. These two naturally led me to pursuing astronomy here at the UofA given the phenomenal program here.

Can you describe your research and any especially interesting learning experiences you’ve had during your time here?

I've had two research projects during my time here, with Dr. Grier and Dr. Boruah. With Dr. Grier, I conducted an in-depth analysis of broad absorption lines over a 7 year period for a quasar found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. With Dr. Boruah, I am analyzing photometric redshift outliers and their impact on cosmological parameters for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Roman Space Telescope.

What's your greatest point of pride from your time at Steward?

My greatest point of pride has to be my research projects. I did not expect to have such amazing projects that not only led to profound results, but also helped me grow immensely professionally and academically. I am extremely proud of the work that has gone into both projects, the results that came from them, and the skills I've gained.

 Any favorite memories or learnings?

Taking ASTR 300B With Yancy. That class was an absolute blast on all levels and I had an amazing time . . . He made a topic I wasn't a fan of, thoroughly enjoyable.

My group project on Cepheids in ASTR 302. The number of problems my group faced regarding data collection was astounding, to the point where it became entertaining and we would laugh every time something went wrong. We ended up with an amazing project and had a ton of fun dealing with all the chaos.

Going to Don's observation nights on Thursdays during my freshman year. My now closest friends came mostly from people I met those nights and I'm very thankful for all the memories (and pizza) that I got.

Can you share piece of wisdom from your time as an astronomy student?

Reach out! Every professor I've interacted with has been thrilled to talk about their work, and if they have space available they will almost always be willing to bring you into their research. Also reach out to your peers! I don't think I would have made it through this degree if it wasn't for the amazing group of friends I made in the department.

What’s next?

Currently I am a Data Engineering Intern at Madden Media. I plan on moving to full-time at this company upon my graduation. I also plan to eventually pursue a Master's degree in Data Science.

We’re excited to celebrate our students who are graduating this semester. Stayed tuned for more Spotlight profiles on Steward Observatory graduates, and follow our social media channels for more insight into the lives of our students, staff and faculty.
