Patrick Ingraham

Associate Research Professor

Patrick joined Steward Observatory in summer of 2023 and is now working with the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics with a focus on developing space-based coronagraphs and telescopes.  After completing an undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Victoria, Dr. Ingraham completed his PhD from the Université de Montréal with René Doyon where his research focused on high-contrast imaging instrumentation for space-based telescopes. He then transitioned to ground-based high-contrast science, working on the Gemini Planet Imager with Bruce Macintosh at Stanford University during the final integration, commissioning, and early operations phases. Subsequently, Patrick spent 8 years at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory; first as the Calibration Hardware Scientist where he designed, managed, and led much of the work on the complex and unique calibration system. He then shifted focus to system engineering and integration. Using Rubin’s Auxiliary Telescope as a proxy for the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope’s operations, he spent significant time focused on the development, integration, and commissioning of the control systems, including the user-interface and operator training.  Patrick’s main research interests are focused on the development of high contrast imaging systems and optimizing development and management practices to accelerate the period between conception and delivery.
