University of Arizona Astrophysicist Chi-kwan Chan Uses AI to Advance Black Hole Simulation Research

Researchers at the University of Arizona and Steward Observatory are exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can accelerate scientific discovery by helping develop new algorithms for black hole simulations. Working with OpenAI’s Codex, astrophysicist Chi-kwan "CK" Chan and collaborators are using AI-assisted workflows to generate, test, and refine numerical methods that model the extreme environments around black holes. The approach has already identified candidate algorithms that could dramatically speed up calculations needed to interpret observations from facilities such as the Event Horizon Telescope, offering a glimpse into how AI may transform computational astrophysics and scientific research more broadly.
